Briefly about the tour

During this tour you would get acquainted with the historical and archeological sites of the Pamirs and Tajikistan. You would enjoy the beautiful scenery with river Oxus that makes the boundary line between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, the photogenic places with shrines, signs as well as the beautiful mountain scenery of the Pamirs. And last but not the least you would observe the preserved culture, tradition and the life style of the Tajik and Pamirian people in the remote villages of the Pamirs in Bartang Valley and Wakhan. During the tour there would be one 2-day trek to and from Gizev village plus with one day stay in Gizev in Bartang valley and 1-day hiking in Langar village (Wakhan valley) to the petroglyphs sites  (over 6000 petroglyphs). Two nights before the finish of the tour in Sawnob village of Bartang valley the special dinner with PAMIR ECOTOURISM SURPRISE would be organized. See more about the tour in the itinerary below:

Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival in Dushanbe. Meeting and welcoming the guests in airport. Transfer to hotel. Evening walks across Dushanbe. B/L/D.

Day 2. Dushanbe. Visit to Gurminj Museum of traditional musical instruments and Museum of Antiquities. Excursion to Hissar Fortress, the Kohna Madrassah museum and nearby Seminary. Lunch at a local restaurant in Hissar. Driving back to Dushanbe. Overnight in Hotel in Dushanbe. B/L/D.

Day 3. Departure to the Pamirs via Tawildara and Khaburabad pass (3252 m) or via Kulyab region. When we pass over Khaburabad to Kalaikhum the scenery and the people change again. The people here are Pamiris with their own languages. Kalaikhum is located on the Panj River, a major tributary of the famous Amu Darya (Oxus) River. Accommodation in a private guesthouse. In Kalaikhum. B/L/D.

Day 4. Leaving Kalai Khum for Khorog. On the way to have stops for taking photo of the beautiful sites. In Rushan district visiting the Vomar Fortress which has an historical story. Overnight in Guesthouse or in Hotel in KHorog

Visit to the Ethnographical Museum, Botanical Garden (one of the highest in the world) and the construction site of one of Central Asia Universitys campuses (unique university of its kind that is specifically developed for the mountain regions by the Aga Khan IV the leader of Ismaili Shia Muslims of the World, and its campuses are spread in tree countries, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan). Accommodation in hotel. B/L/D.

Day 4. Khorog  Ishkashim: Not far from Khorog (45 km) there is the famous Mineral Hot Spring-Garm Chashma and Ruby Mines of Khu i Lal (where Badakhshani rubies were mined as early as 14th century). The road to Ishkashim is smooth journey. Ishkashim is a small town at the mouth of the Wakhan corridor, where the 19th century Great Game ended. Continuing up northwards we will see amazing views of the Pamirs to the left and the Hindu Kush to the right; a number of peaks in view are above 6,000m. If we are lucky and we arrive to Ishkashim on Saturday, we will be able to visit the Crosse border Tajik-Afghan market on the Afghan side. There is no need to obtain Afghan visa for this visit.  Guesthouse. B/L/D.

Day 5. Ishkashim to Yamg the way we will visit the Kah-Kaha in Namadgut one of the oldest fortress on the Silk Road, museum a local scholar, theologian, poet and traveler Sufi Muborak-Kadami Vakhani, who died in 1910. There is a stone pillar with a hole near his house, which he used to calculate a solar calendar. His house is decorated with inscriptions and decorations made by the scholar. On the way we will visit Buddhist Stupa in Vrang, sacred hot springs of Bibi Fatima Zahra, ruins of Yamchun fortress (IV-III B.C.) that once guarded Pamir branch of the Great Silk Road. Home stay. Day 6. Yamg  Langar is situated on the crossroad of the Wakhan Corridor with Pamir and Wakhan rivers where the Great Game took place (reached by Capt John Wood in 1838). Visit to sacred place Shoh Kambari Oftob in the middle of village and hiking to the famous Vakhan Collection of (3200m) petroglyphs. There are about 6,000 petroglyphs showing different scenes of the life of Ancient people of Pamirs.  Homestay. B/L/D.

Day 7,8. Langar → Yashil Kul Lake: After breakfast we will leave the spectacular views of Afghanistan, with the ice-capped summit of the Wakhan Range, and the Pamir River and will cross Khargushi pass. We will arrive to Bulun Kul and Yashil Kul Lakes, where we will stay in a small hamlet of Bulunkul. The people living here are Pamiris, Tajiks and Kyrgyz nomads living in a harsh but hospitable environment. Here we will deepen our understanding of how people have adapted to a life in such remote mountainous areas. We will walk around the ruins of a caravanserai and solar calendar on the north side of Lake Yashil Kul. Homestay. B/L/D.

Day 9. Yashil Kul → Murgab. On the way we will visit an old color paintings in grot Shakhty and if the weather is clear enough, we will head up to the Shorbulak Observatory, from where we can see the Muztag Ata and Kongur Peaks, which are part of the Khun Lun Range (located in China). Murgab is a quiet town with an only bazaar of the High Pamir region where Kyrgyzs and Tajiks live. We will pay a visit to handicraft shop in Yak House. Homestay. B/L/D.

Day 10. Murgab  Median Valley: Explore the stunning Median Valley, one of the main grazing areas near Murgab, as well as the Elli Su hot springs. There will be plenty of opportunity to go on some easy treks in the afternoon and spend time in the reviving hot springs. Yurt stay in Median. B/L/D.

Day 11. Median Valley  Rangkul: The views of mountains and glaciers along the way today are simply breath-taking as the road takes us to the Ak Baital Pass (The White Horse Pass 4655m). This is the highest pass in the former USSR. During the journey, we will take a detour to the Shorkul and Rankul Lakes. This is indeed the The Roof of the World and the hidden site in this expanse of arid landscape is the stunning Karakul Lake, created millions of years ago by a meteorite and noted as one of the most geologically fascinating places on earth. We will have an opportunity for a short walk along the lake. The surrounding area offers some spectacular views, which are especially dramatic with the sun setting over the nearby snow-capped mountains. Home stay. B/L/D.

Day 12. Rangkul  Jalang

Day 13. Jalang  Karakul

Day 14. Karakul  Shaymak In morning, strolling a bit around in the kind of surreal town Murghab, with itsPamrian and Kyrgyz ethnical mix. Possibility for buying Kyrgyz style souvenirs.Going further East towards the Chinese border, then turning south to Shaimak, the South eastern most edge of Tajikistan which is close to China, Afghanistanand Pakistan. Consequently, we are again at the now very headwaters of Bartang, here called in Kyrgyz Aksu (White water). In Shaymak, there are aninteresting miniature mosque, hot springs and Saka Kurgans (graves).4 hours

Day 15. Shaymak  Alichur Driving offroad through this region which is really off the beaten track,We will meet many Kyrgyz shepherds with yurts and huge herds of flock,often yaks and sometimes even Bactrian Camels (the original with the two humps). Possibility to try yak milk products. Then, returning back to the Pamir highway and going till Alichur, 8 hours. Overnight in Homestay or Yurtstay

Day 16. Alichur → Langar Crossing the Khargush pass and entering the Wakhan corridor with spectacular views to the Hindukush. Arrival to Langar, resting and overnight in Homestay

Day 17. Langar  Yamchun Once having reached Wakhan corridor, we will take a detour from the Pamir highway to most famous hot-spring of Tajikistan, the emerald-green Bibi Fatima, which is at the same time a holy place and said to increase female fertility. Overnight in Homestay

Day 18. Yamchun  Garm Chashma Continuing our sightseeing in Wakhan.If it is a Saturday and it is taking place, visiting the Afghan market in       Ishkashim.We leave the Wakhan corridor, the Panj turning north and becoming morenarrow. Going up the side Valley of Garm Chashma with its hotsprings, which are renowned in all of Tajikistan for their sinter terraces and their positive effects on skin illnesses.

 Day 19. Garm Chashma  Khorog

Continuing our road to the lively provincial capital Khorog. In case it is a saturday, visit on Afghan bazaar. In Khorog, visiting the botanical garden (ca. 2300 m), one of the highest in the world. Furthermore, possibility to see the historical and ethnographical museum and the market, and possibility to buy some handicrafts from local artisans.

Day 20. Khorog  Khuf

Spending a relaxed last day in Pamirs in the nice remote village of Khuf in a side valley, which is unusually green for the Pamirs and where the people are especially skilled in preparing milkproducts.

Day 21. Khuf  Dushanbe

Back to the Tajik capital

Day 12. Walking tour to Turumtakulu (transportation of luggage on animal-drawn transport). Station by the pass. Laying tents and stay overnight.
Day 13. Walking tour to Turumtakul. Stop by the lake. Laying tents and accommodation. Tay overnight.
Day 14. Walking tour to Javshangoz. Stop in Javshangoz. Accomodation in private houses or tents.
Day 15. Walking tour to Rabot. Luggage transportation by car. Stay overnight in guest houses or tents.
Day 16. Walking tour to Vrang. Transportation of luggage on animal-drawn transport. Stop by the pass. Laying tents and stay overnight.
Day 17. Passing through the pass, on the way to Vrang. Stop over the pass. Laying tents and stay overnight.
Day 18. Walking tour to Vrang. Stop by Vrang. Accommodation in guest houses.
Day 19. Tour to Bibi Fatima (hot spring) and Khorog. Visiting historical places. Stay overnight in Khorog, in guest houses or hotel.
